Style in the City: Jamila Pomeroy

Jamila Pomeroy

I wear many hats, so this question is always tough: in the simplest form, I am a multidisciplinary storyteller. I am a freelance writer and journalist, as well as the owner of a new indie lifestyle magazine, Avocado Toast Post. I recently got signed as a principle actor/ model and am excited to bring my storytelling in front of the camera. Something most people don’t know is I am a pastry chef by trade — right now, the extent of that is just fresh blueberry cardamom banana bread to go along with my coffee as I write.

Whimsical … or, perhaps, Wes Anderson meets retired goth.

on Instagram.

“This outfit is 50 per cent thrifted and 50 per cent new, like most of my closet. However, I am trying to focus on thrifting as much as possible. The Roots jean jacket is from the ’00s. It has been with me through it all, and it is the one clothing item I’m going to try to hold on to forever. I used to wear pretty much all black, grey and mustard, but I’ve recently begun to expand into other shades of the rainbow. For me, it’s about things that are going to last, supporting ethical and sustainable practices, and local businesses. This top is from Shameless Resale on Main Street; it’s from Korea with Korean tags, so I have no clue who the designer is. I love how the flowers sit off the top, giving it a texture, like wearable art. The wide-leg linen pants were a $12 sale-rack steal and while I’m not a fan of fast fashion, I have a really hard time finding pants that fit and they feel like they were made for me. I think style doesn’t have to be expensive, you just have to be creative and willing to see what you wear as an opportunity to express yourself and tell your story.

While we love Jamila’s cropped denim jacket, we’re also partial to the idea of picking up a piece that boasts a bit more length. This Wilfred Free Abigail Shacket Workwear-inspired denim jacket has a longer, slightly looser silhouette so it will pair well with everything from skinny jeans to wide-leg linen pants. Plus, come the cooler months of fall, it’s sure to look chic layered over a turtleneck, and under your go-to coat.

Linen is a star of the season, sartorially speaking. And we’re big fans of embracing the natural textile with a stylish pair of trousers just like Jamila. Want to do some good while also looking good? Shop local by picking up a pair of these timeless Pierrot Pants in the colour Nomad from the Vancouver-based (and made) brand Harly Jae. Wear them now with a tank and mules, then opt for a chunky knit and tennis shoes next season.

Another look-good-while-doing good item, these Native Plant Shoes are crafted using all plant-based components such as eucalyptus pulp, sisal, cotton and cork. The sneaker is billed as being biodegradable, compostable, and Certified Animal Free. It doesn’t hurt that they look good, too.

$250 | Native Shoes;
