How to Use a Stretch Denim: 5 Key Tips You Should Know
If you are just hemming jeans, you can get by with a larger all-purpose needle, but if you are actually sewing one piece together, you will end up going through several layers of denim at the same time, causing the needles to break. ... and it's gone ... unless you start with a denim needle and save yourself the hassle. If your typical heavy denim, such as jeans, is what you want, stretch the stitches to about 3mm. For light to medium denim, the fabric can be cut along the crease (double layer) with sharp scissors or a new cutter.

So, again, you can combat this problem by buying them very tightly and waiting until they stretch to a perfect fit, but do not wash or heat dry them as this will damage the elastic in the denim, which means they will be even weaker than before. This is a standard trick with stretch denim jeans, and when worn a couple of times, they stretch and stretch. Okay, it won't look its best, but denim fibers are easier to stretch when wet, and when worn, they will stretch exactly where you need them most.
